Every Calgary snow removal company will quote you one of two ways: a fixed monthly or seasonal price, or a price each time they come out. Both look reasonable on paper. Which one actually costs less depends on a winter nobody can predict.

The two models

The break-even is simply how many visits it takes for per-visit pricing to match a monthly plan.

If a monthly plan is $180 and per visit is $50, the plan pays for itself at four visits in a month. Anything beyond that and the plan is cheaper.

Now the part that decides it: Calgary winters routinely produce more than four snowfall events in a month through the heart of the season. Not always, and not every month, but often enough that per-visit costs climb fast in December through February.

Two other things load the dice:

The season is long. When snow can fall from late October into April, you are budgeting for roughly six months, not three. Multiply either price by six before you compare them.

Chinooks create extra events. A freeze and thaw cycle can leave you needing attention without any new snowfall. On a seasonal plan that is covered. On a per-visit plan it is another charge, or you skip it and end up with an icy sidewalk you are legally responsible for.

Per visit is the better deal if:

• You normally clear the driveway yourself and only want help with the big dumps

Where a seasonal plan wins

A seasonal plan is usually the better deal if:

• You travel in winter, or work hours that make early clearing impractical
• You have mobility limitations, or you are arranging this for a parent
• You rent the property out, since the bylaw keeps the owner responsible regardless
• You simply do not want to think about it or watch the forecast

There is also a scheduling advantage people miss. Contract customers get served first. After a heavy overnight snowfall, a company works through its committed routes before taking one-off calls. On a per-visit arrangement in a busy week, you may wait, and the bylaw’s 24-hour clock does not wait with you.

The question that matters more than the pricing model

Whichever way you pay, ask this: is ice control included?

Calgary’s freeze and thaw pattern means a driveway cleared perfectly on Tuesday afternoon can be a sheet of ice by Wednesday morning. The bylaw standard for the public sidewalk beside your property is bare surface, and ice counts against you.

A cheap per-visit price that only covers pushing snow, with salting billed separately, is not really cheaper. It is a smaller service.

Also ask about the trigger depth. Most companies only come out once snowfall passes a set amount, commonly around 5 cm. A lower trigger costs a little more but means fewer skipped events, which matters most on a per-visit plan where a skipped event is a driveway you clear yourself.

1. Will you reliably clear snow yourself when the company does not come? If no, take the plan.
