Snow Plowing in Calgary

Plowing is the machine half of snow removal: a truck or loader with a blade pushing snow off a driveway, a laneway or a parking lot. It is what you want when there is more snow than a shovel can move in a reasonable time, and it is quoted differently from hand clearing because the cost is equipment and time on site, not labour alone.

When plowing is the right tool, and when it is not

Plowing moves volume. It does not do detail work, and any contractor who tells you a blade alone will finish the job is setting you up for a complaint in February.

• A plow is right for driveways of two cars or wider, long or rural-style laneways, parking lots, drive aisles, condo visitor parking and approaches.
• A plow is wrong for steps, landings, tight walkways and anything within a blade’s width of a garage door, a gas meter or a low retaining wall. That work is done by hand or with a blower on the same visit.
• A plow alone does not handle ice. After the snow is off, a packed layer is usually left behind. Ice control is a separate step, and on our residential plans the ice melt is included rather than billed after the fact.

If someone quotes you a plow-only price for a property with steps and a public sidewalk, you are comparing two different jobs.

Residential driveways and laneways

Single, double and oversized driveways, plus the rear laneway access many Calgary homes depend on to get the car out. Snow is stacked where it will not slide back across the entrance or block the sightline onto the street.

Parking lots and drive aisles

Retail, office and mixed-use lots. We plow the aisles and stalls, clear the entrances and approaches first so nobody is stuck at the road, and agree snow storage locations before the season rather than improvising once the piles are already in the way. Condo and strata complexes

Shared parking, visitor stalls and the routes between buildings. Boards and property managers get the coverage confirmed in writing, which matters when a resident asks why one area was done before another.

What plowing leaves behind, and who deals with it

Three things always come after the blade. Make sure your quote says who does them:

1. The windrow across the driveway entrance. When the City plows a residential street, it leaves a ridge across your driveway. That ridge is yours to clear, not the City’s, and it is usually the heaviest snow on the property.
2. Walkways, steps and the public sidewalk. Calgary’s bylaw gives the property owner 24 hours after snowfall stops to clear the public sidewalk. Fines escalate at $250, then $500, then $750 within twelve months. Our residential plans include the driveway, the walkway, the steps and that public sidewalk, which is the part most quotes quietly leave out.
3. Snow that has run out of room. Once piles eat parking stalls or block sightlines, snow has to be relocated or trucked off site. That is snow hauling, and it is priced separately because it depends on volume and distance.

Per push or seasonal

Per push means you pay each time the equipment comes out. It looks cheap in a mild November and gets expensive in a heavy January, and you are competing for a spot on the route with everyone else who has not committed.

Seasonal means one price for the winter, whatever it does. That is what most Calgary customers choose, because it makes the winter budget a known number and puts you on a committed route instead of a call-back list. Our seasonal plans are:

Seniors get 5% off, and booking before October 15 takes 15% off a residential seasonal plan, or 10% off the season for a commercial site.

Protecting the surface

Plow damage is the most common complaint homeowners have after a winter, and almost all of it comes down to a driver who does not know the property. Before the season we walk the site, note where the edges, curbs, drains and soft landscaping are, and set the stacking spots. Response times: what an honest answer sounds like

We will not promise a fixed number of hours that holds for every customer during a heavy overnight snowfall, because nobody can hold that promise across a whole route. What we will do is agree the snowfall trigger and your priority in writing before the season, and tell you where you sit on the route. Ask every contractor you are quoting the same question. The ones who answer with a flat “two hours, guaranteed” for an entire city are the ones who will be late.
