Ask five Calgary companies what snow removal costs and you will get five different answers, usually followed by “it depends.” That is technically true and completely useless when you are trying to budget.

So here are real numbers, what actually moves them, and the one cost most people forget to include.

What Calgary homeowners actually pay

For a standard residential driveway, there are three ways companies price the work.

Seasonal or monthly plans. This is what most Calgary households use. Rates generally run from about $130 to $300 per month, depending on how much area gets cleared. Published rates around the city sit right in that band: some companies advertise plans starting near $129 a month, others price a standard residential plan around $180 a month. Per visit. If you would rather pay only when it snows, expect roughly $30 to $70 per visit for a standard driveway and walkway. One-time and hourly work is often quoted per labour hour instead, commonly around $70 per hour.

Full-season contracts. Some companies quote the whole winter as one number rather than monthly. For a small to medium property this usually lands somewhere between $250 and $600 for the season, and higher for large or corner lots.

A quick reality check on those numbers: Calgary winters are long. When the season runs from late October into April, a “cheap” monthly rate multiplied by six months is not always cheaper than a flat seasonal contract. Do the multiplication before you sign.

What actually changes your price

Five things move a quote more than anything else.

Driveway size and layout. A single-car driveway in Killarney is a different job than a double with a long approach in Tuscany or Aspen Woods. Corner lots cost more because there is simply more frontage to clear.

Whether sidewalks are included. This is the most common gap between two quotes that look identical. Ask directly whether the public sidewalk bordering your property is included, because under Calgary’s bylaw that sidewalk is your responsibility, not the City’s.

Walkways, steps and back lanes. Front walk, side path, back steps and lane access all add time. Homes in older inner-city areas like Bridgeland or Inglewood often have more of this than newer suburbs.

Ice control. Some plans include salting or ice melt, some charge separately, and some do not offer it at all. In Calgary this matters more than almost anywhere else, and we will come back to why.

Trigger depth. Most companies only come out once snowfall passes a set depth, often around 5 cm. A lower trigger costs more but means fewer skipped visits. Always ask what the trigger is.

The cost most people forget: ice, not snow

Here is what makes Calgary pricing different from Toronto or Vancouver.

A chinook can push temperatures above freezing in a few hours, melt the top layer of snow, then drop back below zero overnight. The driveway you paid to have cleared on Tuesday afternoon can be a sheet of ice by Wednesday morning without a single new flake falling.

That matters for two reasons.

First, Calgary’s bylaw requires public sidewalks bordering your property to be cleared down to bare surface within 24 hours of snowfall ending. Ice counts. A path that was compliant in the afternoon can be non-compliant, and genuinely dangerous, by morning.

Second, the fines are real. $250 for a first offence, $500 for a second, and $750 for a third or more within twelve months. If the City ends up clearing it for you, that is a minimum of $150 plus GST plus administration fees added to your property taxes.

So when you compare two quotes and one is $40 cheaper but excludes ice control, you are not really comparing the same service. You are comparing a plan that keeps you compliant against one that might not.

Commercial snow removal pricing

Commercial work is quoted per site rather than off a price list, because the variables are much larger: lot size, number of entrances, sidewalk length, snow storage space, whether hauling is needed, and how fast you need it cleared.

The factors that drive a commercial quote most:

• Response time. A guaranteed two-hour response after snowfall costs more than a next-day service, because it commits crew and equipment to you specifically.
• Ice management. Parking lots and entrances usually need salting or anti-icing as a standing part of the contract, not an add-on.
• Snow hauling. Once piles eat into parking stalls or block sightlines, snow has to be trucked off site. This is priced separately and it is not cheap, so ask early whether your site will need it.
• Sidewalks and pedestrian routes. Often the highest-liability part of a commercial property and frequently underquoted.

For a commercial property, the cheapest quote is rarely the relevant number. A single slip and fall claim generally costs far more than a season of proper service.
